DBA/Senior Software Engineer
JOB TITLE: DBA/Senior Software Engineer
LOCATION: Manchester
REPORTING TO: Product Team Leader
DIRECT REPORTS: None
JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Product Team Leader, the DBA/Senior Software Engineer will design and deploy database solutions in line with the goals of the company. Responsible for supporting Oracle databases and ensuring their performance, availability and security is maximised.
OBJECTIVES
- Provide technical leadership to the team in regard to database solutions and ensure developments are future proof and fall in line with company strategy.
- Ensure that the company prescribed processes and standards are adhered to and contribute to their improvement
- Assist with the development and mentoring of team members in accordance with the personal development process.
- Assist in the maintenance of the product cores and ensuring any code changes made to the core fit with the future direction of the product and are technically sound.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for designing database solutions to large and complex problems in line with long term product goals.
- Responsible for implementation and release of database changes according to agreed timescales and costs.
- Perform reviews on advanced/complex designs and code changes.
- Responsible for ensuring availability and performance of databases solutions is maximised.
- Responsible for troubleshooting and problem solving of SQL and Oracle development.
- Responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases.
- Provide mentoring and coaching to the team.
- Provide training and lunch and learns to other teams/team members.
- Perform the role of Lead Developer on large projects.
- Provide assistance solving appropriate complex problems (technically complex and presents various viewpoints) with peers and more junior members of the team during the feasibility and planning stages of the lifecycle.
- Actively seek the identification and mitigation of development risks.
- Perform planning and tracking on large pieces of work.
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE
Essential:
- Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) DBA.
- A solid understanding of database administration with particular focus on Oracle and Oracle Technologies (in particular DataGuard and RMAN).
- The ability to breakdown problems, analysis performance and design the most efficient solutions.
- A solid understanding of High Availability solutions.
Desirable:
- Experience of designing solutions for the airport industry.
SKILLS /EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- Extensive experience of Oracle Database Administration.
- High Availability Oracle solutions, for example Oracle DataGuard.
- Backing up Oracle databases using RMAN.
- Hands-on experience of software development throughout the whole software development lifecycle.
- Integration, testing and deployment experience.
- Experience of Source Control tools (PVCS, SourceSafe, etc)
- Experience of tiered architectures.
- Experience of writing papers and proposals.
- Experience and ability to teach or instruct co-workers.
- Experience of on site work and working with customers.
- Methodologies/Tools/Platforms:
- UNIX (Solaris/AIX/HP, Shell Scripts)
- Windows
- RDBMS development (Oracle)
- Oracle PL/SQL
Desirable:
- Experience of Microsoft Project and developing plans.
